There’s nothing like the look and smell of a brand new car! But then comes the first scratch, and soon you’re looking at the next. In things--be they cars, clothes, tech toys, and even (sadly) relationships--this is true, but not in our relationship with God. His “compassions are new every morning!” (Lam. 3:23) On this first day of 2012, let’s enjoy the opening hours of a brand new, unspoiled, unscratched New Year! And let’s remember that our God is a God of newness who has ordered “starting new” into creation: New mornings, new seasons, New Years, and new life in Jesus Christ!

Israel’s 1st Century King Herod is noted in the Bible as having listened to John the Baptist’s preaching. Herod was perplexed at John’s teaching but listened nonetheless. But in the end Herod had John beheaded. Why? Simply, Herod was distracted by his life choices and this led him to an unfortunate decision. This Sunday we’ll learn how Herod could have avoided his dilemma, so we can learn to rise above the distractions in our lives that compete for our time and ruin our faith.
